Kelsey Mendoza hits grandmother in head with dumbbell

22-year-old Kelsey Juanita Mendoza had a domestic incident with her grandmother, Juanita Denise Traughber, at her Center Road residence on the night of April 23rd. When officers arrived, they located Traughber and her husband, Edward Weaver, in front of their home and noticed Traughber had visible bruises on her left eye and an open wound to the right side of her head. She advised them that Mendoza had come by unannounced to pick up the items her mother had left behind. Traughber said that while Mendoza collected her mom’s belongings in the bedroom, a verbal argument ensued, during which she asked her to leave, but Mendoza refused because she wanted to take a bed from the room. Mendoza then punched her grandmother twice in the face and pushed her against the wall. Traughber pushed her back, fueling their scuffle, which led to them on the ground, where Mendoza picked up a 1.5-pound dumbbell and hit her on the right side of the head before Weaver broke up the fight.

Officers went to Mendoza’s Evans Road residence, where she stated that she showed up at her grandparents’ house, adding that she “did announce herself” to them. She tried to take a bed from the bedroom because it was her mother’s, but her grandmother became upset and told her to leave. She said during their verbal dispute, Traughber lunged forward and punched her on the bridge of her nose. Mendoza said that she punched her in the face and pushed her off her. She advised that her foot got caught between the bed and the floor, causing her to fall on the floor, where Traughber mounted her, started hitting her, and hindered her from getting up. Mendoza said she reached for the dumbbell and hit her on the foot to get her off, which was ineffective, prompting her to hit her on the back of the head with it before leaving the scene. Mendoza was taken into custody for aggravated domestic assault.
